PROFILE PICTURE GUARD- Facebook’s latest update, the Profile Picture Guard gives women more control over profile pictures and protects them from virtual perverts in India.
Facebook has chosen India as the place to experiment and perfect for the Profile Picture Guard, considering the misuse of profile pictures has prompted many Indian women to either opt towards not uploading their profile pictures at all or live in fear of spotting their picture somewhere it should not be. According to Facebook's research, shows this will be more in the case of India only. Profile pictures being downloaded and shared without permission is only one of the problems that women face on social networking platforms, the other most obvious being nasty Facebook messages and comments with vulgar language.
Facebook published a blog post on Wednesday explaining the features and why they have decided to roll them out, especially for Indian users. It reads:
In India, we’ve heard that people want more control over their profile pictures, and we’ve been working over the past year to understand how we can help. Today, we are piloting new tools that give people in India more control over who can download and share their profile pictures. In addition, we’re exploring ways people can more easily add designs to profile pictures, which our research has shown helpful in deterring misuse. Based on what we learn from our experience in India, we hope to expand to other countries soon. The shield they are providing will stop people from saving or even screen capturing somebody's profile picture in the following way:
- Saving or downloading profile picture, or sharing it with others.
- Tagging themselves or others in someone else’s profile picture.
- Preventing others from taking a screenshot of the profile picture.

This Facebook Profile Picture Guard when turned on, will be signified by a blue border around the picture and a blue shield below the profile picture.
Harassment on Facebook is a glaring issue for most of the women's in India and Facebook has had difficulty curbing it, but this is a step in the right direction from the social networking giant.
So the question is, does this protection really work among all the women's in India? Maybe not, but let's wait and see.
