India's own version of GPS
The Chinese Smartphone maker, Xiaomi is in advanced talks with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to bring their smartphones containing NavIC chipsets in India. When the details of this project are finalized,US-based tech giant Qualcomm is going to manufacture these chipsets. Xiaomi will use NavIC-friendly chipsets developed by Qualcomm on its smartphones in India. This makes Soon, Xiaomi smartphone users could use first "India's own version of GPS".
NavIC chipsets are designed to provide accurate position information service to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1500 km from its boundary.
According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the NaviC GPS Chipsets is well developed for terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking, and fleet management and integration with mobile phones.
As reported by the ISRO,
“Since Xiaomi is in agreement to use these chips, the company may launch its mobile phones with NavIC,”.Further, ISRO has officially announced that the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an alignment maintaining standards for smart mobile services, has confirmed the establishment of NavIC Chipsets in Xiaomi smartphones.
