Facebook just rolled out a new tool that uses AI to convert any 2D photos into 3D. Facebook Inc. is developing its AI-powered tool that lets people convert any 2D photos into animated 3D. The tool, called "3D Photos", used to only be available for high-end phones with multiple cameras, but will now be available on most iOS and Android devices.
This feature is available on iPhone 7 or later or a "recent midrange" android devices.
Facebook had first revealed its first 3D Photos feature back at the 2018 F8 developer conference, which was rolled out a few months later. Until now, this feature depended on the dual-lens “portrait mode” capabilities, which was only available in new, high-end smartphones.
Facebook in its blog post,

“To bring this new visual format to more people, we have used state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to produce 3D photos from virtually any standard 2D picture. This system infers the 3D structure of any image, whether it is a new shot just taken on an Android or iOS device with a standard single camera, or a decades-old image recently uploaded to a phone or laptop,”

 “This advance makes 3D photo technology easily accessible for the first time to the many millions of people who use single-lens camera phones or tablets. It also allows everyone to experience decades-old family photos and other treasured images in a new way, by converting them to 3D.” Facebook added.

How to use the Facebook 3D Status feature?

To update your status, follow these steps:

1. Update Facebook App.
2. Click in the What’s on Your Mind field of the Share box.
3. Select “3D Photos”.
4. Pick any image of your choice from your camera roll.
5. Select "Upload".
6. Click on "Post". (This will automatically convert your 2D photo into 3D).

This advance makes 3D photo technology easily accessible for the first time to the many millions of people who use single-lens camera phones or tablets. It also allows everyone to experience decades-old family photos and other treasured images in a new way, by converting them to 3D. People with state-of-the-art dual-camera devices can benefit, too, since they can now use their single, front-facing camera to take 3D selfies.

Anyone with an iPhone 7 or higher, or a recent midrange or better Android device, can now try these options in the Facebook app.
