The British Museum Releases 1.9 Million Free Images to Explore 'Million Years History Planet'-- A Gigantic Database Classified into Categories - "Collection Themes"
The British Museum in The United Kingdom has one of the largest art collections in the world. Thousands upon thousands of works reflecting the history and diversity of different civilizations from all over the planet. Works that do not always require a physical presence in the museum to explore them, since the agency has now made almost "2 million photographs available to everyone" on its website.
According to The British Museum, a total of "1.9 million images become available to anyone and for free, without having to have a museum account or the like." Most of them now have a Creative Commons 4.0 license. What does this mean exactly? Under this license, the images can be downloaded, shared, and modified for non-commercial use. The only requirement is to give credit to the British Museum wherever they are published. Perfect for downloading photos for free and reusing them.
Apparently, the British Museum has been working on this project for years and they have finally decided to advance its launch taking advantage of the confinement caused by the closure of the physical museum. They indicate that they have only cataloged about half of the collection so far. Although some of the photographs were previously available, this "relaunch" includes hundreds of thousands of new photographs and 85,000 objects published for the first time.
A Gigantic Database Classified into Categories - "Collection Themes"
These collections can be accessed online from the museum's official website. Once inside it is possible to explore the images by categories, themes, types, places ... or we can directly search by keywords. The museum itself highlights some relevant works, topics of interest, or own selections from galleries.
Each of the images has information to give it contexts, such as the author, the place of origin, its date, or a short description of what we are seeing. In the most important works, it is also possible to zoom considerably to see the smallest details.
For the most advanced, the museum's online tool also allows you to filter searches by years or categories. It even allows you to download the results into a database for research purposes.
The British Museum collection collects an important sum of history, art, and science through the thousands of works that it has grabbed since its foundation. It is certainly an interesting way to spend time exploring the museum without having to leave home.
