Let's Encrypt, which offers Free Multi-Domain HTTPS certificates has now issued a "Billion Free SSL Certificates" in the last 4 Years.
letsencrypt.org is a site that provides free, automated, and open certificate signing authority (CA) from the nonprofit Internet Security Research Group (ISRG), has officially announced with a blog post today stated it's issued a billion certificates since its launch in 2015.

We issued our billionth certificate on February 27, 2020. We’re going to use this big round number as an opportunity to reflect on what has changed for us, and for the Internet, leading up to this event. In particular, we want to talk about what has happened since the last time we talked about a big round number of certificates - one hundred million.

HTTPS certificates issued by Let’s Encrypt are valid for just 90 days. However, the site provides automation tools to manage renewals automatically for your site.
HTTPS certificates, the default means of secure communication on the internet, comes with three advantages:
  1. Authentication.
  2. Integrity.
  3. Encryption.
It allows HTTP requests to be transmitted over a secure encrypted channel, thus protecting users from an array of malicious activities, including site forgery and content manipulation.
However, the firm increased & serving today more than 4x the websites with only two additional staff and a 28% increase in budget
In June of 2017, we were serving approximately 46M websites, and we did so with 11 full-time staff and an annual budget of $2.61M. Today we serve nearly 192M websites with 13 full-time staff and an annual budget of approximately $3.35M.
letsencrypt.org launched with the goal of speeding up the web's encryption rate and bringing down the costs of enabling HTTPS, Let's Encrypt's ACME (Automatic Certificate Management Environment) protocol offers an easy means to set up and issue SSL certificates that can be renewed and replaced without manual intervention from webmasters.
Last week, Apple announced that it’ll reject any HTTPS certificate in Safari valid for more than 13 months, starting September 1. So, certification authorities such as Let’s Encrypt that offer automation tools will become more important for website admins.
