Don’t Install TikTok On Your Phone, It’s A Spyware designed for your phone: Reddit CEO
TikTok is one of the most popular social platforms available short-form mobile videos, but the Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman had made some harsh statements for the popular app, calling it “Fundamentally Parasitic” at an event Wednesday.
The controversial comments made by the Reddit CEO during a panel discussion with former public policy exec Elliot Schrage and former Facebook VP of Product Sam Lessin. During a brief conversation about the feature innovations of TikTok, Huffman pushed back hard on the notion that Silicon Valley startups had something to learn from the app.
Huffman, During the conference;
Huffman finally concluded his statement “Fundamentally Parasitic” by saying that he will never install an app like that on his smartphone. Huffman also said that he actively warns people to avoid installing TikTok as it is a spyware.
Steve Huffman’s comments were mostly controversial during the conference.
“We have a dedicated technical team focused on adhering to robust cybersecurity policies, and data privacy and security practices. In addition, we periodically conduct internal and external reviews of our security practices in an effort to ensure we are keeping up with current risks.”
Following its launch in China back in September 2016, TikTok, which allows users to create 15-second video clips, has gathered over 800 million monthly average users.
Tik-Tok the app has seen more than 1.5 billion downloads during its lifetime, making it the seventh-most downloaded app of the last decade. But TikTok has been bothered with privacy issues, including a $5.7 million fine for illegally collecting the personal information of children. It’s also been the subject of a US national security review, been banned by the Navy and TSA, and is the target of a class-action lawsuit that claims it comes pre-installed with “Chinese surveillance software.”
Not only Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman, but many tech executives in the industry are worried due to the practices of TikTok.
Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO also raised her concern and said that TikTok is growing at a very fast pace with the help of fingerprinting and has a huge database.

“Maybe I’m going to regret this, but I can’t even get to that level of thinking with them,” Huffman said. “Because I look at that app as so "fundamentally parasitic", that it’s always listening, the fingerprinting technology they use is truly terrifying, and I could not bring myself to install an app like that on my phone.”
