Disney Plus Surpasses 50 Million Subscribers Since Launch, Disney’s new subscriber numbers follow a series of rollouts in international territories, including the UK, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland.

Disney plus, which costs $12.99 per month, has already surpassed 50 million paid subscribers since its launch on November 12, 2019. The ad-free streaming service famously garnered 50 million subscribers since its launch, in just five months, including free subscriptions.Disney plus new subscriber numbers follow a series of rollouts in international territories, including the UK, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland. Disney previously reported that it had surpassed 28 million subscribers during an earnings call with investors on February 5, 2020.
Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney said in a statement;
"We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,“Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+."It has since expanded to 14 total countries, including India and much of Western Europe. Disney noted Wednesday that "8 million of its subscribers are in India", where the service combined with the existing Hotstar streaming service there.
The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic has also driven more demand for streaming in recent weeks. As the virus spread rapidly around the world into a pandemic several countries announced lockdown, it has shuttered swaths of the entertainment industry and confined people globally to their homes. That's resulted in spikes in video streaming.
In a recent interview with Barron's, Disney executive chairman Bob Iger revealed that subscribers should expect to see more of the company's theatrical content releasing earlier on streaming as a result of the current global crisis. So far, Disney has released Frozen 2 and Onward earlier than expected on Disney+, with Artemis Fowl to follow in the coming months.
To evaluate, Netflix has 167 million subscribers around the globe, or simply underneath one-third of Netflix’s whole subscriber base.
